OpenAI Launches Always-On Dots Agents as Scrutiny of Its AI Safety Record Grows

OpenAI Dots, the company's new always-on personal AI agents, began rolling out on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Unlike a chatbot that waits for each instruction, a Dot is built to keep working toward a user's goals in the background. OpenAI announced the product at its DevDay conference in San Francisco, just as it faces questions over earlier incidents in which its experimental agents accessed government systems without permission. Each Dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, which OpenAI describes as its most capable model for complex reasoning, coding, research and computer use. Ema AI employees just picked up a $77 million vote of confidence from investors who believe large companies are done testing AI agents and ready to put them to work. The Mountain View startup closed a Series B round led by Bengaluru-based Creaegis. Existing backers Accel, Section 32, and Prosus all returned with significantly bigger checks than they wrote the first time. The round brings Ema's total funding to $140 million and comes just two years after the company launched out of stealth.
