A Kyiv Southern Bridge drone strike on Thursday became the first drone attack on one of the capital’s bridges since the full-scale invasion began, according to Meduza and the Kyiv Independent. It followed a drone hit on a school in the city’s Solomianskyi district earlier the same day. Officials said children were sheltering when the school was struck, and no injuries were reported in either attack.
The bridge matters because of what it carries. It crosses the Dnipro River, which divides Kyiv into eastern and western banks, and it carries both road traffic and Kyiv Metro trains. Reuters described it as a major link between the two halves of the city, which is why the transport halts that followed matter beyond the physical damage.
How the day unfolded
- Morning: a drone hits a school in the Solomianskyi district, starting a fire on its third floor. Children and teachers are in a shelter.
- Around 12:20 p.m.: two drones hit near the support section of the Southern Bridge, with cars and a metro train crossing, according to reports.
- 2:25 p.m.: the Kyiv City State Administration says traffic has resumed after a preliminary inspection found no critical damage.
- 9:50 p.m.: Mayor Vitali Klitschko reports a further hit. The Kyiv Post says a bridge support was damaged and metro and surface transport stopped again.
A school struck while children were in the shelter
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the drone set fire to the school’s third floor and partly damaged a wall, doors and windows. Children and teachers had moved to a shelter before the impact, and nobody was hurt. The Ukrainian news portal Hromadske reported that this was not the first time the building had been hit.
The Kyiv Post, citing CCTV footage, reported that the drone was a Geran-4, that 104 children were inside, and that its warhead failed to detonate. HCN could not independently verify those details. Meduza published a photograph of a police officer and a State Emergency Service worker standing with the drone’s warhead after the strike.
What happened in the Kyiv Southern Bridge drone strike
Klitschko said on Telegram that the drones hit near the bridge’s support section. The structure is cable-stayed, meaning its deck hangs from cables attached to towers. Footage shared online showed fire and a column of smoke above the span, and the blast wave pushed dust from the ventilation system into the carriages of the train crossing at the time.
The Kyiv City State Administration said neither passengers nor the driver were hurt and the train itself was undamaged. It was sent to a depot for inspection. The Kyiv Post reported that a further drone struck the bridge area that evening. Outlets count the impacts differently: the Kyiv Post calls the evening hit the third, while the Kyiv Independent calls it the day’s second attack, because the first attack involved two drones.
What it means for people in Kyiv
For residents, the immediate effect was disruption. Metro and bus service across the bridge stopped after the attacks, and Business Recorder reported that authorities rerouted transport over alternative routes. The same report said traffic over the nearby Paton Bridge was also closed in both directions.
Before Thursday, traffic across the Southern Bridge was barred whenever an air-raid alert, the public warning that drones or missiles may be approaching, sounded, dpa reported, and Meduza noted the same rule for metro service. HCN could not establish whether an alert was active when the drones hit. Dpa said city authorities then introduced a new warning system for potential drone attacks, and the reports reviewed did not explain how it works.
Why jet-powered drones are harder to stop
Russia has used jet-powered attack drones against Kyiv since late August. They fly faster than the older propeller-driven models based on Iranian Shahed designs, which makes them harder for Ukrainian air defences to intercept, according to Reuters. Ukraine recorded 3,177 Russian drone strikes in September, the same report said.
A week of mounting pressure on Kyiv
The bridge attack followed the largest Russian strike on Kyiv’s energy infrastructure since last fall, which caused power outages a day earlier. Overnight attacks across Ukraine before Thursday’s strikes killed at least six people and injured 38, according to the Kyiv Independent. On September 28, a drone also hit a central Kyiv building housing an academy’s governing body, and the BBC Russian Service reported that former security council secretary Volodymyr Horbulin was among the injured.
For a fuller account of the bridge attack and the moments around it, see Meduza’s report on the strikes. Whether the bridge was deliberately targeted is not established by the reporting reviewed, and Russia’s government had not been quoted on it in those reports.
What is still unclear
The preliminary inspection after the first Kyiv Southern Bridge drone strike found no critical damage, but a full engineering assessment had not been published when this was written, and the reported evening strike came after that check. A Business Recorder report on Friday said Klitschko again reported strikes on the bridge; HCN could not tell whether this refers to the same evening hit.
HCN did not find a Russian official statement on either the school or the bridge. HCN will update its coverage of the Kyiv Southern Bridge drone strike as officials release inspection results and as the sequence of impacts is confirmed.
