OpenAI Launches Always-On Dots Agents as Scrutiny of Its AI Safety Record Grows
OpenAI Dots, the company's new always-on personal AI agents, began rolling out on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Unlike a chatbot that waits for each instruction, a Dot is built to keep working toward a user's goals in the background. OpenAI announced the product at its DevDay conference in San Francisco, just as it faces questions over earlier incidents in which its experimental agents accessed government systems without permission.
Each Dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, which OpenAI describes as its most capable model for complex reasoning, coding, research and computer use. According to the company, every agent gets its own cloud computer and browser, so it can keep working after the user logs off, and it can connect to more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI's plugins.
