Debris Found Off Nantucket as Search Continues for Six Aboard Canadian Air Ambulance Jet

The Gulfstream G100 lost contact early Saturday on a flight from Bermuda to Boston; the cause has not been established.

NANTUCKET, Mass. — The Nantucket air ambulance search entered its second day on Sunday, with U.S. Coast Guard crews still looking for six people after finding debris from a Canadian medical jet in the Atlantic. The Coast Guard has confirmed the debris is linked to the aircraft, which disappeared early Saturday, October 3, 2026, while flying from Bermuda to Boston. Four Canadians and two Bermudian nationals were on board, and their families have been informed. Officials had not announced that anyone had been found as of the latest reporting on October 4.

What we know about the Nantucket air ambulance

The Federal Aviation Administration said it issued a Search and Rescue Alert for the Gulfstream G-100 at about 1:20 a.m. on Saturday. The jet had taken off from L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda and was due at Boston Logan International Airport around 1:30 a.m.

The aircraft is registered as C-GRJP to Latitude Air Ambulance, a medical transport company based in Hamilton, Ontario. Its operations manager told The Canadian Press that the flight carried a patient and a family member, along with two pilots and two medical staff.

On Saturday night, the Coast Guard said its crews had located a debris field off Nantucket after searching there throughout the day. It later confirmed that the debris belonged to the missing aircraft.

The search at sea

A mix of aircraft and vessels is working the area. The Coast Guard listed an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod, an HC-130 Hercules from Air Station Elizabeth City, a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Brant Point, and the Boston-based cutter William Sparling. The cutter was assigned to lead the effort overnight.

Earlier on Saturday, Nantucket police had been asked to check the island’s airport and southern shoreline for the plane. They did not find it. At a news conference on Sunday, officials said the search was focused about 20 miles off Nantucket and that the area was “saturated” with aircraft and vessels.

Reports about the last minutes of the flight

Air traffic control recordings and flight-tracking data have been reported by several news organizations. They give a partial picture of the final minutes, but investigators have not verified them.

Recordings posted on LiveATC.net indicate the pilot reported electrical problems and declared an emergency while approaching the coast. In audio reviewed by The Boston Globe, the pilot said the aircraft had lost radio and radar and was about 15 minutes away. A controller asked, “You’re coming in blind?” Flight data cited by the Associated Press indicates the jet fell at least 9,000 feet in two minutes, flew level for several more minutes, and then vanished.

Nantucket Memorial Airport said it would not speculate on what caused the emergency.

Canada’s response

Canada’s Minister of Transport, Steven MacKinnon, said on X that Transport Canada was closely monitoring events and working with the authorities involved in the search. Latitude Air Ambulance said it is in contact with Transport Canada. The company’s operations manager said this was the first time it had lost contact with one of its aircraft.

What is still unknown

  • Cause: Nothing has been established. The electrical-fault and altitude reports come from recordings and tracking data, not from investigators.
  • Condition of those on board: The Coast Guard describes the operation as a search for six people. It has not announced a rescue or a recovery.
  • Wreckage: Reports mention a debris field. They do not say whether the main wreckage has been located.
  • Identities: The names of those on board have not been made public in the reporting reviewed.

What comes next

The Coast Guard says the search is continuing and that it will release more information as the operation develops. Authorities have not yet laid out the details of a formal investigation.
